Issue 8 2024, Acquisition International | 23 Despite launching the organisation in 2020, just two weeks before the UK was plunged into lockdown, Al’s Pals was determined to see its mission fulfilled. In such uncertain times, the last thing it wanted was to leave people feeling stranded, and it was fortunate enough to have two volunteers who were able to support patients in hospital throughout the pandemic. This act alone is what kept Al’s Pals’ dream alive – people truly appreciated the efforts it went to in order to support them, and soon enough the wider collective became synonymous with compassion throughout the community. Nobody deserves to be alone when going through their cancer journey. Whether you need a friend to sit with, or someone to be there to give you advice and support, Al’s Pals is on-hand to help. Priding itself on its compassionate approach, this wonderful non-profit organisation makes the difficult processes easier on each person involved. It’s for this very reason that Acquisition International is proud to present Al’s Pals with a position in the Non-Profit Organisation Awards 2024. Be it the patients themselves, or their extended friends and families, this compassionate collective – primarily comprised of volunteers and cancer survivors - is prepared to visit hospitals and homes to dispense assistance and guidance in any preferred form. Deeply immersed in the community, and determined to see to it that no person should face their cancer journey alone, Al’s Pals has become a friendly face during uncertainty – an element that truly distinguishes it as a group. As mentioned, Al’s Pals is an organisation mostly made up of volunteers who may have experienced the effects of cancer in some way. Whether they are a survivor themselves, or have played a crucial role in supporting someone who has gone through similar experiences, each individual is carefully chosen based on their ability to empathise and connect with patients and their families. Without these exceptional individuals, Al’s Pals recognises that it wouldn’t have been able to deliver the sheer concentration of assistance that it presently does, so it feels only right to place them in the spotlight. However, the Al’s Pals team doesn’t end here. In addition to more experienced volunteers, the organisation encourages students to delve into the world of charity work. Primarily, the organisation works alongside students who have demonstrated an interest for going into the profession in the future, however there are those who simply wish to help others due to their inherently empathetic natures. Regardless, students are placed alongside volunteers to observe and understand how Al’s Pals operates – more so how it provides such an invaluable level of support to those struggling with their cancer journeys. It’s a refreshing approach to charitable services, and it’s wonderful to see young people expressing a desire to support others out of the good of their own hearts. In our times of need, it’s never shameful to ask for help. Regardless of whether you’ve tackled every challenge alone, or have relied on people your entire life, illness brings with it the chance to reach out for somebody to lean on. Al’s Pals promises to be just this for any experiencing hardship following a cancer diagnosis. Specialising in ensuring that no person feels alone while navigating their cancer journey, Al’s Pals is a non-profit organisation whose compassionate nature has resonated with individuals throughout the UK. Below, we explore how the organisation flawlessly provides ongoing support to cancer patients and their families during such a trying time. Apr24379
